The Mars Report - February 13, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe.  Today I have another edition of The Mars Report for you to enjoy. You know what? I think that it is really nice that just when I want to write a Mars Report that the rover Curiosity has done something special! It is not every time, but today that is the case. The last we left off, with Curiosity, we were pointed into the Dingo Gap heading for Mount Sharp.

.

Well, we made it through the gap, and there was something different on the other side. However, before we get to the surprise for this edition, I want to share another discovery that Curiosity made since last we met. We all know that Curiosity is a rock hound, among other roles. Well, Curiosity has scored a great rock find, by the name of Harrison.

.

[caption id="attachment_2366" align="aligncenter" width="630"]Martian Rock Harrison Martian Rock Harrison[/caption]

(Martian Rock Harrison)

.

Harrison is a rock with a crystalline surface made up of feldspar crystals in a pyroxene dominated matrix. Harrison is an igneous rock, meaning that it was created from magma, hot lava, rising to the surface and cooling. Harrison was examined by the Chem-Cam as well as the camera that gave us the image just above. This is not the first igneous rock found during Martian exploration. However, it is the largest and nicest looking specimen I have seen, so far.

(Curiosity Looking Back)

.

As you can see, from the picture above, Curiosity has passed over its very first… … … … sand dune! That’s right, My Dear Readers, our little rover, Curiosity, has passed over its very first sand dune on Mars. I was very happy to find this little surprise, waiting for me, when I sorted through the images uploaded since my last visit. I am always looking for something interesting to write about, today Curiosity delivered!

.

Above is a color image of the sand dune, behind Curiosity. If you look closely you can see the tire tracks as the come up to the sand dune. Fro the information I read at the NASA/JPL web site, there was some nail biting, as Curiosity traversed this sand dune. Curiosity made it across with no problems whatsoever, and NASA/JPL made sure by running some system checks, once it was past the dune.

.

(Black and White Image Clearly Shows Tracks in Sand Dune)

.

The above captioned image clearly shows Curiosity’s tire tracks in the sand dune it just traversed. This is a great test for the rover Curiosity, and proof positive of the great design and construction of this little rover. If you look in the background, you can see the escarpments that I discussed in the last edition of The Mars Report. I like it when the images fit together that way. It helps me to put together a compelling narrative.

.

So, My Dear Readers, our little rover Curiosity has proved itself, yet again. So far there is nothing that the Martian surface has thrown at our little rover Curiosity, which it hasn’t taken in stride. It is a testament to American design and ingenuity, and a tribute to the men and woman that helped design and construct Curiosity.

.

My Dear Readers, the past three weeks have been difficult, for me. Today, I find myself in terrific pain and discomfort. I really wanted to write some more, I had a whole other topic I wanted to fold into this edition. That is just not going to happen.  I apologize for not pushing through the pain, as I usually do, and producing four or five more pages. I just cannot. I still have to; upload images, Label images, upload text, make corrections, integrate text with images, proof, and publish this story before I can rest today. I am looking at another good two to three hours work.

.

Will Republicans Overthrow the Speaker?

.

[caption id="attachment_2356" align="aligncenter" width="605"]Speaker Boehner Addresses Press Conference Speaker Boehner Addressees Press Conference[/caption]

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe.  Yes, My Dear Readers, you read that title correctly, elements of the Republican party are working behind the scenes to execute and overthrow of the Speakership. Evidently, many of the Tea Party Republicans, in both the House and Senate, are genuinely outraged over the ‘missed opportunity’ with the passage of the ‘Clean Raise of the Debt Ceiling’. For me, I believe this is Much Ado about Nothing and this clean bill is a sign of Congress working.

.

I completely disagree with the idea that, somehow, Republicans have missed an opportunity. The only opportunity that was missed, was one for; causing further damage to America’s credibility in the international community, risking yet another downgrade in our credit rating, and hampering the recovery of our stalled economy. Quite honestly, My Dear Readers, the decision to not ‘throw a money wrench into the machine’, like Senator Cruz did last time, is the mature and reasoned decision.

.

Every time this debt ceiling comes up for a vote, I am reminded of what Alan Greenspan said of the debt ceiling (‘Meet the Press’ April 2011)

.

““This is an unnecessary problem. The debt ceiling serves no useful purpose… All it’s doing is requiring belt and suspenders, and we’ve got lots of that type of legislation which is running around constitutionally.”[1]

.

Under every other President, prior to President Obama, the Debt Ceiling was seen as “Housekeeping Legislation” and was passed with nothing more than a by-line of the bottom of page 12 of the political section of the newspaper. It was/is a no-brainer. Congress is fully aware of what it spends as it passes legislation each year.  The debt ceiling is nothing more than another opportunity for political theater and, in my humble opinion, there is way too much theater on The Hill already. However, the Tea Party fringe, of the Republican party,  are never to be overlooked nor any chance for political theater missed.

.

That is why, now in the cloak rooms and hallways of the offices of the House of Representatives and the Senate, radical members of the Republican party are cloistered evaluating their chances of a coup d'etat of Speaker Boehner. From what I am reading, and hearing through the grape vine. The Club for Growth was the first of these Tea Party linked groups to put their feet in the water of a coup.

.

“The Club For Growth got the ball rolling by proclaiming that something was wrong with the House leadership, “When we heard that House leadership was scheduling a clean debt ceiling increase, we thought it was a joke. But it’s not. Something is very wrong with House leadership, or with the Republican Party. This is not a bill that advocates of limited government should schedule or support.”[2]

.

[Back story – The ‘Club for Growth’  is a fiscally conservative 501(c)4 organization active in the United States of America, with an agenda focused on cutting taxes and other economic issues… founded in 1999 by Stephen Moore, Thomas L. "Dusty" Rhodes, and Richard Gilder. Moore served as the first president of the original Club from 1999 until December 2004[3]]

.

Not to be undone by, or upstaged by, the Club for Growth’s call to arms. The Heritage Foundation’s Heritage Action chimed in, thusly;

.

“The Heritage Foundation’s Heritage Action warned House Republicans that they are scoring tonight’s vote, Rather than suspending the debt limit again, Congress should “put the budget on a path to balance in order to avoid a much worse fiscal crisis in the future—before deciding how much more to borrow.” Heritage Action opposes S. 540 and will include it as a vote on our legislative scorecard.”[4]

.

Well now, if that is not saber rattling that I don’t know what is! Last year, Senator Rand Paul, threatened action against the Speaker if he worked to pass clean debt limit legislation, then. The bill was just passed today, so we can expect that the heated rhetoric to continue, in the coming days. Yet, I have saved the best for last, the best as far as the most heated rhetoric. This is from the Senate Conservatives Fund:

.

“Instead of using Republican control of the House to stop bad legislation, Speaker Boehner has used it to increase spending, raise the debt limit, increase taxes, pass a bloated farm bill, and fund the implementation of Obamacare. Instead of fighting for conservative principles, Speaker Boehner has completely surrendered to the Democrats.”[5]

.

Ok, that simply has to be my favorite line in this whole shrill debate, so far. “Speaker Boehner has completely surrendered to the Democrats”. Woof! I cannot think of a single Democrat that would see the past five years, in that light. Much less a single objective; reporter, news anchor, journalist or blogger that has followed the past five years with any objectivity. See, that is really what I have never understood, about the rhetoric coming out of the far right. This rhetoric just does not reflect the reality of the past five years.

.

[caption id="attachment_2355" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Speaker Boehner Addresses Republican House Freshmen Speaker Boehner Addresses Republican House Freshmen[/caption]

.

It would be one thing if the language and examples they used could stand up to the light of day. Represent the events of the past five years, in a truthful and honest fashion. Even come close to realistically characterizing the actions and threats coming from the own, and/or represent the actions and dialogue coming out of Democrat members. This is just not the case, and few networks dare to leave reality behind and report this hyperbolic rhetoric as truth.

.

Now, so far, there are not enough members of the House of Representatives (on the record) supporting the ouster of Speaker Boehner. Quite honestly, I cannot see any coup d’etat  going beyond the conversational stage. Mostly because any change in the Speakership will be seen (by both the American people and the international community) as a further sign of weakness on the part of Republicans.

With House Republicans currently polling in the single digits for approval, they have little room for making any more mistakes. In my humble opinion, ousting Speaker Boehner would be a catastrophic mistake, on the part of Tea Party Republicans in the House of Representatives. Now, that is just my opinion and so far these Tea Party members have not shown a great deal of insight or finesse, when it comes to national politics.  Therefore, I am not taking any bets.

.

I will keep my ear to the ground and my eyes pealed for any further developments. If I hear or see anything I will be sure to come back and write it up for all of you, My Dear Readers, to see and read.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!

.

P.S. I am still without much food in my home. I do my best, honest I really do. I am not lying about how much money I make… I do not lie about the lack of food I suffer. I sincerely apologize for even mentioning this problem. However, it was a good friend that told me… “Danny, if you don’t tell people your needs… there is no way those that want to help, know when they CAN help.” I am asking for help. I have written in many articles how to help. One way is to click the link below to my eBay Store for The Other Shoe. Please… if you can… Please do help.

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am here to culminate my celebration of the publication of Three Hundred-Fifty articles published at The Other Shoe.  I am deeply moved by the huge number of ‘Likes’ the five parts of this series received. Not since my publication of ‘The Story of Daniel’ and my first publications of ‘The Mars Report’ have I seen traffic this brisk, and enjoyment this marked. I work tirelessly, each and every week, on the publications here at The Other Shoe. Most times I work having eaten little, for weeks at a time. Every day I write in spite of terrific pain. Regardless of my hunger and regardless of my pain I work because I value you, My Dear Readers, and I value your time and your consideration.

.

It is not often that one person can find a creative outlet that brings happiness and enjoyment to so many other people, at no cost to them. I work, every day I am able, to find new and different subjects to write. I want to try and meet the reading needs of as many people as is humanly possible. People love to read. I have always loved to read and the more differing subjects the better. I do my best to write without judgment, and for the most part I succeed at that goal.

.

Today I come here to present the conclusion of the celebration of my achievement, 350 articles published here at The Other Shoe. Through sickness and through pain. Through hardship and through mounting hunger, I have pressed myself to goals most see as unobtainable. I do it all for you, My Dear Readers, and I do it out of love. For, over the past four years, you have stood beside me and given me the strength to continue. Strength even to excel at writing for the future, and holding a bight light against the past.

.

This series, ‘350th Article at The Other Shoe’ was presented in five parts. Honestly, I could have presented six, or seven… as many as ten. However, my work was gravely cut short. I was not cut short by a lack of; desire, creativity, nor material with which to present. Rather Indeed, I was cut short by dire and upsetting news of my health. I, thankfully, have been prescribed a better and stronger pain medication. After ten years of taking my current medication, without ever abusing the medication once, my doctor saw the severity of my pain due to a degeneration of my health. I am very thankful that he trusted me so much as to give me a very powerful pain medication. It is bringing me much needed sleep, and more time spent with less severe pain.

.

Now that my pain is better managed, I am ready to write and publish this conclusion to the celebratory series of articles. I will present this conclusion as a review of the five articles that made up this series. Much like my ‘A Week in Review’ I will present each of the five articles, in order, with links to the article and a synopsis of their content. At the end of this review I plan on sharing a little about the future of The Other Shoe.

.

Now, without further adieu I bring you ‘350th Article at The Other Shoe – Conclusion’:

.

  • ·        350th Article at The Other Shoe – Part One: “I welcome this milestone in my publishing/writing career at this time. Lately, I have been writing articles… strong articles back in the political vein. Unfortunately, I know that there are some of you, My Dear Readers, that do not like my political works. I understand that this group of readers are, sometimes, even offended by what I write. That you feel my political work is not fairly balanced and that I lack objectivity. Whereas I respect your opinion? I fear that the case may be made that this may not be entirely true... Early on I was setting a tone and raising the bar of journalistic integrity. I refused to merely kowtow to Democrats and lambaste Republicans. I had a deep desire to treat, My Dear Readers, with honesty and integrity from the onset.” In this first edition of this series, I take you back to my very first article. I share with you, My Dear Readers, the reason I started writing this blog, hyperbolic rhetoric to sew the seeds of hyper-partisanship. I explain that I desire to be a quite and credible counterpoint to the radical fervor of the ‘Far Right’ (soon to be known as the ‘Tea Party’). I want to write political works that truly are fair and balanced, but not only that I want to shine a bright light on the hypocrisy of this ilk and the overt greed. I feel that I could be a genuine alternative source, for some, from this hypocritical and bigoted machine of hyperbolic rhetoric. I knew then, as I know now, that taking a stand against avarice will make me a target. Some will stoop to use friendship, like a hammer. Reasonable support and assistance, merely a reward for parroting like-minded rhetoric. My Dear Readers, I do without food to stand my moral ground. I refuse the accusations that any words, not offered as kowtowing, are harsh judgments and my thoughts but insults. I am eternally thankful that all of you, My Dear Readers, know better.
  • ·        350th Article at The Other Shoe – Part Two : “Yesterday I did my very BEST to convey my innermost feelings about the political work that I publish. I did my level best to communicate that the political articles I do publish I do not want to offend or upset Americans of either stripe. I conveyed that I am a ‘Reagan-Democrat’ and that I am proud of my political beliefs. I shared with you that my beliefs are complex and that I do not merely parrot another person’s rhetoric and call it my won thoughts. I genuinely endeavored to explain why I write about the political topics that I do. I tried to explain that it is never my intent to; offend, upset, persecute, demean or insult people with whom I do not share the same political bent.” My Dear Readers I HAVE managed to write numerous political articles without ever demeaning or insulting those with whom I have differing beliefs. On more than one occasion I have been, publicly, reproached for “putting down Republicans or the Republican party”. Each and every time this has happened? I have invited the party accusing me of open prejudice and insult to go over my body of work and QUOTE a SINGLE time I have insulted or demeaned someone for being Republican!” Each and every time I am met with silence. Reason? I am not a ‘saint’ but I do take care to not insult the person, just lay bare the offending policy or action. A PRIME example of this is the question I wrote for Bob Shieffer to use on ‘Face the Nation’. A call went out, over the ‘Face the Nation’ Facebook page for a followers to submit questions for Bob To ask Senator Mitch McConnell. Many people submitted questions, as did I. I am very happy to announce that Bob Schieffer  used MY question in the interview with Senator Mitch McConnell! I asked ‘Why are Republicans allowing Freshmen Congressmen to control the (debt) debate. It is like allowing the teenager in the house to control the family budget!’ He was stumped, My Dear Readers. So very stumped that he did not EVEN answer the question. So timely and accurate was my question, that the dynamic behind the question was not resolved until THIS YEAR! For three years Republicans (in the House) allowed the Freshmen ‘Tea Party’ members to hi-jack our government and damage our nation’s credit rating all over a ‘Debt-Debacle’. The result of the Speaker “Allowing Freshmen (Congressmen) to control the debate”? TWO terms of the “Least Productive Congress in HISTORY” and Congressional Republicans with SINGLE digit Approval and ROACHES being more popular than Congressional Congressmen. IF only Senator McConnel and Speaker Beohner HAD listened to my question, earlier!
  • ·        350th Article at The Other Shoe – Part Three: “It is these series articles, here at The Other Shoe, that I would like to focus in today’s installment, Part Three. In just the past two years I have embarked on three different series articles. Two, of the three, I managed to bring to completion. The third, which was the first, I have yet to complete. It is this series of articles that I begin with, today. ‘The Story of Daniel’ ended up being an nine part (incomplete) series. Today, I bring you my favorite article of ‘The Story of Daniel’! In this, the THRID, edition of my 350th celebration I focus of my beginning SERIES of articles. To this point I had only written and produced single issue, and single edition articles. I had yet to expand my writing abilities into multi-edition articles. This is when that trend changed, and my blog saw New Life! At this point I already imagined and considered a ‘multi-issue’ article on the Mars rover Curiosity and its mission on Mars. I had yet to start said series, but it was on my mind. ‘The Story of Daniel’ was my very first extended series of article at @ The Other Shoe. It was the result of a suggestion by a friend, during the campaign. Honestly, I did not think that it would help at all, and would represent much more work than it would garner funds. In the end, that proved to be the case. The contributions never went up, as a result of ‘The Story of Daniel’ and my brother Darrell ended up making a huge contribution that sent me over the top. However, now the ‘Series’ bug had bitten me, and I managed to turn a bad idea into a good one with MANY following series of topics that people WANTED to read! ‘The Whittling of America’ was definitely one of the series that many people, of several nations, genuinely enjoyed. The series focused on the growing disparity between those ‘Haves’ (that prospered during the recovery), and the 98% of America the ‘Have-Nots’. Through NO fault of their own, the 98% of Americans were getting less and paying more for it. Be ‘it’; food, rent, clothing, health care, cars, gas, transport and even as simple as a movie. The gap was growing, and it was growing rapidly.

.

  • ·        350th Article at The Other Shoe – Part Four: “Now, the world of MMORPGs I was a little late to the party. I had played Guild Wars, right before I entered the world of Azeroth in World of Warcraft. I know it’s crazy but just writing the name of that game… takes me to that place. Since I started playing I have spend nearly an entire year ingame in WoW. I know that sounds like a lot, but spread over seven years, it is only like one day out of each week spent playing. That is a lot easier than one might think. The game is highly addictive, especially if you are good.” Now, My Dear Readers, Part Four focused on MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Games), specifically the MMORPGs that I had played! Let me be brutally honest, My Dear Readers. IF I could JUST write about PC Gaming and MMORPGs and STILL have the traffic, support and respect I currently enjoy? I would do that in a heartbeat. However, I know that my political works are very important to you, My Dear Readers, as is “The Mars Report’, excerpts from ‘The Adventures of Princess Nadia’ and everything else that I share with you. I simply must present a rounded approach to my blog. I will always present information, screen shots, and videos from PC Games… as long as I have a blog and a computer to play games on, this I will do. I do love MMORPGs. They combine my love of computers, with my love of gaming, and add in a large amount of social interaction. Unfortunately, of late I have little time to spend in games. I am SO SORRY Jason Kleppinger… that I have been unable to join you in Rift. I PROMISE that I am making every effort to get in game with you and play. Please forgive me, and I look forward to seeing you IN Rift, soon. In the series ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’ I reviewed and showed screenshots and videos of NINE MMORPGs! It was quite an accomplishment and marked the pinnacle of achievement for me. Each of the NINE articles included screen shots of my character and mounts (the horses and like that we ride in game to go faster), videos of game play (most of the time I tried to get video of battle and sometimes with a ‘Boss’), and with each I tried to tell you about a different game mechanic. By the end of the series, everyone should have possessed a rudimentary knowledge of how an MMORPG is played, and hopefully enticed you enough to try playing a game of this genre. Writing and publishing this series was the single most pain I ever suffered writing, preparing and publishing any series. However, at the same time it was the most fun, too.

  • ·        350th Article at The Other Shoe – Part Five : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. This is Part Five of the series of article celebrating my 350th article here at The Other Shoe. Now, My Dear Readers, I have taken you back to the very beginnings of this love of mine, The Other Shoe. I have shared retrospect of several of the successful series I have published over the years. Today, I am devoting this Part Five to a look back over the series The Mars Report.” What CAN I say? ‘The Mars Report’ is an ongoing series of articles here at The Other Shoe. As much as I love PC Gaming, I love Space and space travel. The odds are greatly stacked against me ever getting into space. Even IF my novel does extremely well, and I make lots of money. I seriously doubt that any antion would put me into a spacecraft and into orbit. Just oo much of a liability, and too much of a chance ot death in space. However, I just couldn’t think of a BETTER way to die, than in space! At this point, I am not sure just how many ‘The Mars Report’ I published. I think that it is somewhere between twelve and fourteen. That beats out ‘MMORPGs And YOU!’, and all other series. I can see that this series will continue just as long as this blog continues. This Fifth part takes us all the way back to the very first edition of ‘The Mars Report’ and ends with excerpts from that week’s edition of the series. This week, I am going to add a little something different to ‘The Mars Report’. Nope, I am not going to tell you (here) what that is, you are just going to have to come here and see for yourself. It will be worth your time and effort, trust me.I love seeing Mars. I love sharing the images and the science of Mars. Most of all? I love that mankind still has a chance of pioneering SPACE and making SPACE our future, and leaving earth as our crib. It is my belief, that is how mankind’s existence was intended, and if we fail and pioneering SPACE? Our species will most assuredly become extinct.

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the very end, of the end of the 350th celebration. I cannot put into words just how much I have enjoyed your company, over the past week and six articles. I am very proud that I have written, edited and published 350 articles here at The Other Shoe. I genuinely hope that my health allows me the opportunity to publish another 350 articles. I have it in me; I very much want to share.

.

It is my hope that I will continue to write, and hopefully sell some of my possessions at eBay, so that I might keep my cell phone… and just maybe retire the ‘Pay-Day advance’ I have been forced to keep since October of last year. IF I could do those things… I have a feeling I would be happy, again.

.

I do make mistakes. When I do I apologize immediately. I do not let things fester in the background for; weeks, months, years. Judge not, least yea be judged. I write as often and as much as I am physically able. I do so out of love, I do so as a way to ask for support… but not without giving my work as payment for support. Last week I found out that I have a “Subdermal Tumor” that must be removed and biopsied to find out if it is benign or not. That has me… concerned… and upset that I must face this… and a fever that never goes away… a result of “either the hardware or the bone grafts” becoming infected.

.

Hence, a visit to an oncologist and an Infectious Disease Specialist I must make in the next two months. Not the end of the world, but boy say “Howdy!’ would I rather not face this alone (without the ability to talk to friends I grew up with over the phone) and hungry. I mean, really, facing possible cancerous tumor AND infected hardware or bone graft ON TOP OF being hungry all the time… That is asking… a lot… from a man already depressed, and all. OK, I am so sorry that I just did that… wrote all that. I am sorry.

.

I am not going to remove it… I will just stop here and ask your forgiveness for my ‘opening up’ and sharing my fear(s) and problems.

.

I will write again soon. Next should be a ‘The Mars Report’. I hope to see you then.

Disneyland 50th Anniversary Annual Passholders

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am making a departure from my usual faire, and format. Necessity dictates that I push the limits of my creativity, and what I am willing to part with… in order to pay rent, and perhaps to keep my cellular phone. I am posting this article, again, and the items for sale at eBay in hopes of doing just that, pay my rent and keep my cell phone. I am not greedy, nor is my heart filled with avarice. To merely desire three meals in a given day, instead of the one. That is not greed. To desire to keep one's only means of communication, with which to find solace of the soul by talking with long lost friends. Surely this is not greed?

.

My Dear Readers, I come here today to ask for your frogiveness. Forgiveness for seeking assistance, in a time where millions are in need. I know that many suffer, greatly. That, in comparison, my one meal a day is more than they. I ask for forgiveness that I seek to eat more healthy, and more often. That I seek to keep the roof, I fought so hard to obtain, still over my head this day. This is the reason that I come here and post this atricle, again. If it is in you, that you might share, and share alike. Share so that I might eat more healthy. Share that I might keep a line of communication open, to give solace to a mind bent with hurt and pain.

.

The year was 2005. The date was May 4th. Disney and Disneyland were kicking off a six-month Celebration. This was my friend Allen’s fifth year working for Disneyland at the Blue Bayou restaurant. For the next six months all employees were asked to postpone vacations, curtail sick days and come to work every day scheduled and not miss a beat.

.

If an employee did this, at the end of that six month period they would receive; a two week paid vacation, favored status for next promotion and a collection of Commemorative pins and plates. Allen made it to the end of the six months, and worked there another five years. He was quite proud of himself fpr the accomplishment he had undertaken. They bestowed the gifts, just as promised, with a commemorative plaque. He received Six Disneyland DESSERT PLATE Sleeping Beauty Castle 50th Anniversary Disney crownsand five of the pins (One - Disney 50th Anniversary Main Street Popcorn Cart Walt & Mickey Jumbo Easel Pin)

.

For the past eight years he has treasured these items like no other. They have been kept safely in their boxes, padded with their pads, and (most) never used at all. The plates have never been out of the boxes for more than a min. and never used to eat!

.

I am leaning toward setting the whole sets for higher price because of the rare items. With all the items and ‘sets’ what is posted is the ‘Suggested Contribution’ to get the corresponding perk. As a donor you always have the option of donating larger amounts and taking the desired perk.

.

This was a difficult decision for both of us and more so for Allen because he went six months without; being late once, calling in sick, over staying a lunch and accepting all offered open shifts. He really put his nose to the grindstone and is/was extremely proud when he was awarded these 50th Anniversary Annual Passholder Exclusive Commemorative items. I am hesitant to offer them for this purpose. However, this first week has given me grave concerns and I realize something has to change. I am hoping that this might be part of that change.

.

The first shot is of all six Disneyland 50th Anniversary Annual Passholders Exclusive Dessert Plates:

The Great Californian Exodus

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Most of you, My Dear Readers, know that I live in Southern California. I have resided here since… like, 1985. I have seen California go through many trends and difficulties in that time. What California is about to face, just might break this state, and cause the single greatest exodus from California ever seen. Most Americans that read newspapers, or watch a good deal of news, know that both Texas and California are gripped in drought.

.

What most people do not know is that the problem affecting both states is right here in Southern California. Now, before I get into all the science and meteorology involved in our current situation, and how that will instigate the single greatest migration from California in America’s history. I would like to share a little Californian history.

.

California was a desert. Let me say that again, the area we now call California was a desert. In just the past millennium (actually dating back to 850 AD) California has experienced; one drought that lasted two-hundred-forty years (240) followed, just fifty-years (50) later by another drought lasting one-hundred eighty years! A little quick math will tell you that in a single period of four-hundred-seventy (470) years the area known as California spent four-hundred-twenty (420) in drought!

.

“Through studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers have documented multiple droughts in California that lasted 10 or 20 years in a row during the past 1,000 years — compared to the mere three-year duration of the current dry spell. The two most severe megadroughts make the Dust Bowl of the 1930s look tame: a 240-year-long drought that started in 850 and, 50 years after the conclusion of that one, another that stretched at least 180 years.”[1]

.

Granted, this all happened long before European man had reached the North American continent, and long before the creation of America. Yet, this has only been America since Columbus arrived in 1492. Before the colonization buy European immigrants, California had spent most of the past millennium uninhabitable. Unfortunately for the current habitants of the Great State of California, it appears that history is set to repeat itself. Let me repeat myself  “it appears that history is set to repeat itself”.

.

There is the little history that I am going to share, today. For, now, I have so much more to share. Share about the problem today and now!  Little do the inhabitants of; California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas know, but a high pressure system FOUR MILES HIGH AND 2,000 MILES LONG has parked itself off of the California coast…. For the past THIRTEEN MONTHS! (Since December 20th, 2012!)

.

[caption id="attachment_2327" align="aligncenter" width="500"]High Pressure Ridge Off California USA High Pressure Ridge Off California USA[/caption]

(Barometric Pressure Map of West Coast USA)

.

Now, My Dear Readers, I have thrown myself into research mode since last Friday. I wanted to have as much of this verified as possible prior to publishing this work. To my knowledge science has never recorded a high pressure system parking for thirteen months on one place. Let me repeat myself for those just skimming this article. From my research, I have found no recorded evidence of another high pressure system ever parking off of a coast for thirteen months and not moving. This is the very first time, in recorded history, that a four mile high and two-thousand mile long ridge of high barometric pressure has remained stationary for thirteen months!

.

“But meteorologists have fixed their attention on the scientific phenomenon they say is to blame for the emerging drought: a vast zone of high pressure in the atmosphere off the West Coast, nearly four miles high and 2,000 miles long, so stubborn that one researcher has named it the "Ridiculously Resilient Ridge."[2]

.

Further:

.

“The current high-pressure ridge is even stronger and more persistent than a similar ridge that parked over the Pacific Ocean during the 1976-77 drought, one of the worst in the 20th century.”[3]

.

The current ridge of high pressure, parked off of the west coast, is; higher in altitude, longer in distance, and been parked for ten months longer than the ridge that caused the 1976-77 drought. So, My Dear Readers, there is this huge dome of high pressure (no one knows where it came from… my speculation? The Sea of India because I remember reading, several years ago, how the temperatures in the Sea of India were TEN DEGREES higher for many months) sitting parked off the California coast. This ridge of high pressure has caused 95% of our annual precipitation to head north, then east. That includes all the snow for the; Northern, Central and Southern Sierra Mountains. Want proof? Check out the images from NASA below:

.

[caption id="attachment_2328" align="aligncenter" width="630"]Comparison Photos from Orbit of Sierra Snow Pack 2013/2014 Comparison Photos from Orbit of Sierra Snow Pack 2013/2014[/caption]

(Comparison Photos from Orbit of Sierra Snow Pack 2013/2014)

.

“Statewide, the water content of snowpack was measured at about 20 percent of average for this time of year, and only 7 percent of the average April 1 measurement, the California Department of Water Resources said Friday.

Readings were 11 percent of average for the date for the northern mountains, 21 percent of average for the central Sierras and 30 percent of average for the southern Sierras.”[4]

.

Next, The Drought. Some scientists are forecasting that the current drought, in California (and Texas);

.

“scientists believe that this year may end up being the driest in the last half millennium, according to University of California-Berkeley professor B. Lynn Ingram. Californians are scared, with good reason: Fire danger in the state is high, and drinking-water supplies are low.”[5]

.

Now, for a little visual aid:

.

[caption id="attachment_2330" align="aligncenter" width="630"]Californian Drought Map 2014 Californian Drought Map 2014[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_2329" align="aligncenter" width="630"]CA Drought Intensity Key CA Drought Intensity Key[/caption]

(California Drought Map and Key 2014)

.

California has the largest population of any state in the United States, with:

.

“The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of California was 38,332,521 on July 1, 2013, a 2.9% increase since the 2010 United States Census.”[6]

.

Just over thirty-eight million residents and the least amount of; snowfall, rainfall, and precipitation recorded since 1850. That just seems, to me, to spell disaster.  A disaster resulting in the single largest shift in population (exodus) in American history. Possibly even greater than during the ‘Dust Bowl’ of the early twentieth century. Now, I had a very good friend (Bobby Duncan)  I discussed this article with, over the weekend. He tells me “You know where they will all head, right?” Bobby (understandably) believes that the vast majority of the fleeing residents of California will head to Texas. (Thus turning Texas a very bright Blue) However, I am of a different opinion. Texas is suffering with a like drought, too.

.

You see, when California experiences a La Nina the rain passes over California and heads to Texas. Leaving California dry as a bone, and Texas a little greener. Conversely, when California experiences an El Nino the rain falls mainly here, in Southern California. Leaving Texas rather parched.  However, this is entirely different. There is no La Nina, nor is there an El Nino. There is no precipitation making it past this stationary high-pressure ridge to; New Mexico, Arizona or Texas. NONE!

.

With this ridge of high pressure, reaching four miles high and 2,000 miles long, all the precipitation is moving north, then east. I fear that, if this high pressure ridge remains stationary, that this drought will parch; California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. Quite honestly, My Dear Readers, we could be looking at a migration of tens of millions of Americans from FOUR states… Northward.

.

Now, you have the science. Now, you have the facts. I have shared the images that I currently posses, and links to all the articles I have scoured. I am in extreme pain… and I want to publish this work... before I loose my nerve.

.

My Dear Readers, I am gravely concerned, and from what the scientists are writing and telling us… I am gravely concerned with good cause. This is not something that will just pass in the night. It has been parked here for thirteen months with no sign of it leaving. It has stolen more than a year’s worth of snow and rain, and there is no sign of it leaving. This ridge of high pressure is a freak of nature the likes of which has never been recorded in the history of California or America.

.

I do not mean to alarm… but, perhaps… alarm is the correct response.

.

I will keep you informed, just as soon as I have more information or more science.

Sunday Funnies - February 9th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it is Sunday then it is time for ‘Sunday Funnies’ here at The Other Shoe. Today’s edition takes me back to an old show I used to really enjoy. See if you can guess the name of the show; “And now for something completely different _____” . Any guesses? If you have the answer, put it in a comment here at the blog, or in a comment at Facebook in the thread I pimped this article.

.

Today is completely different for my ‘Sunday Funnies’ feature. Alexander performs in many ways, and each week is more and more enjoyable. However, today is much different in that I have never seen any rat perform… quite like today. Today… Alexander plays!

.

Just like a dog or a cat, Alexander is playing ‘Tug-of-War’ with me. He is a set of ‘Dog Tags’ that came with some PC FPS game, ‘War Rocks’. That somehow I have managed to keep these fake dog tags over the years. Alexander wants to play with these dog tags. Now, in all the years I have owned rats, and ‘Fancy Rats’ I have never encountered one that actually plays.

.

Not only the type of playing, My Dear Readers, but also how long he played! Alexander showed an attention span that I find exceptional. He played, with these dog tags, and me for nearly fifteen minutes! In human time, that would be equivalent of playing for about four hours.

.

‘Fancy Rats’ are changing. There I said it, you can all now call me crazy. The fact remains, and I am the first one to put it into print, ‘Fancy Rats’ are evolving for the better. During my time in college and I think in psychology I learned that the act of play is a sign of a higher consciousness, or being self-aware. Rats play with each other, all the time. You can see it in the pet stores, you can see it (even) among street rats. However, a rat playing with a human for an extended period of time, and to develop a bond with a particular object as a ‘play toy’ … well, that is something more.

.

So, without further adieu here is ‘Sunday Funnies’ and Alexander playing Tug-of-War!

A Week in Review - February 8th, 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. This week was an adventurous week, as it is every three months. I have a quarterly appointment with my primary care physician. He is located in Los Angeles County, Rolling Hills Estates. You can read all about it in the article linked below ‘Danny Update – Medical February 4th, 2014’. I have made this journey, now, four times. It is getting easier, each time.

.

This article is not about this journey. This article is my weekend review of all the work I did manage to get accomplished. Actually, I am pretty darn impressed that I managed to publish as much as I did, this week. Usually, the week of my twelve-hour journey, I only get one or two articles published. Part of the reason, I feel, is that my doctor finally upgraded my pain medications. This has allowed me relief from pain, more often. As well, I am desperate to keep writing… as I am hoping that if I write… someone… will… help.

.

Either way, and without further adieu, here it ‘A Week in Review’:

.

  • ·        Sunday Funnies – February 2, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. As I always say; “If it is Sunday, then it is time for ‘Sunday Funnies’ at The Other Shoe! Of late, I am doing my best to catch Alexander R Hanning while he is doing some of things that endear him to me. He; Hops, Skips, Jumps and other kinds of festive moving, that express his happiness with being my son. He does these most when he has woken up, in bed with me and after he has eaten some human food he enjoys.” Alexander talks more and more often than any other rat I have ever owned. He talks longer, and I swear… he listens and then replies. Sometimes he gets so into what he is saying, that his whole head bobs in an exaggerated fashion. Alexander wants to talk to me. Even though he does not say words (he has no lips), I can tell what he wants to communicate… most of the time. Rats understand our language, by listening to inflection and recognizing patterns. Just like dogs and cats. I am working to get more and longer videos of Alexander talking. Look forward to seeing them here, soon. Tomorrow (Sunday) you will get to see Alexander PLAY!

  • ·        Danny Update-Medical February 5th 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. First, I would like to “Thank you!” to everyone that came by last week, and the week before. I am not sure if you all noticed, but? I now have several articles with 45 ‘Likes’ and that hasn’t happen in a month of Sundays! Thank you for all of the ‘Likes’ and Shares and mentions to friends and family. You have no idea just how Good I feel when I see all the traffic and all of the ‘Likes’. It makes my day, or week.” I really do hope that I can repeat the level, quantity and quality of work I produced last week. Not often have I seen that many articles with that many ‘Likes’ in one week. I am gratified and deeply moved by that large a show of appreciation by you, My Dear Readers. Now, I understood that this week was going to be slower. There is just no way humanly paossible for me to prepare for my visit, spend a day away, and recover and still get that much work done, of that quality. I am proud of the work I have accomplished this week, don’t get me wrong. It is just… well, when I see, like, 45 likes on SEVERAL articles in one week? I am very happy… and I think that I actually might (some day, soon) be able to make some money with my writing. Thank you for putting that smile on my face, My Dear Readers.

  • ·        The TRUTH About CBO Report and the ACA: “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Just yesterday headlines of many web based ‘news’ and media outlets blasted the ‘Affordable Care Act’ (aka Obamacare) as a job killer. These creative writers posted that “Obamacare will cost 3 million jobs…”. However, if anyone would have taken the time to read the CBO report, they would have found out the truth was something else indeed. Below is a quote from the Los Angeles Times February 4th, 2014:…” This is the kind of disingenuous and manipulative hyperbolic rhetoric that motivated me to create this very blog. It is still my strong desire to be a counterpoint, to anyone willing to read and listen, to the hyper-partisan rhetoric and disingenuous reporting done by certain cable media outlets. I am no ‘saint’, I will make mistakes and I am in no way shape or form perfect. Having said? My Dear Readers I will never lie to you! I will never publish something I know to be false, and I will do my level best to be honest and forthright in all I write and all I publish so long as I have the privilege of life. This week several media outlets sought to drum up support and increase their base by misquoting sections of a Congressional Budget Office report on the effects of the Affordable Care Act on the economy. They took sections out of whole sentences, and they presented these bits and bites in such a way as to misrepresent the report. They engaged in gravely disingenuous reporting and they defied your trust in their organizations. I respect you, My Dear Readers. Any media outlet that chooses to act in that fashion, does not respect you, My Dear Readers. If you are still laboring under the opinion that the ACA (a.k.a. Obamacare) is going to cost the economy 3 million jobs? You owe it to yourself to read this article and find out the truth. Thank you.

  • ·        A Little Family History : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Every three months I am required to make a long an arduous journey. That journey happen this Tuesday, and I am still feeling the pain. Gratefully my doctor improved my pain medications, and I have actually managed to sleep a night or two, in the past four. However, I am quite bereft of the physical ability it takes to produce. Produce the writing, at the quality and quantity, you My Dear Readers have become accustom.” This material was first published nearly three years ago. The subject of my mother’s place of birth, and how/where my Father and Mother met, came up in my doctor’s appointment on Tuesday. It is not often enough, that I have the opportunity to write and publish work… like this, this uplifting and enjoyable. I am working on a whole story, based on the chance meeting of my parents, and their background. I had not told my doctor that my mother was a Native American born on a reservation in New Mexico. Nor had I told Dr. Gorlick that my father met my mother, very near that reservation, while he was working on the Manhattan Project. If you have never read this, take some time and give it a read today. You really won’t regret it. As well, it will give you an idea of the other kind of writing I can accomplish… and a glimpse at another novel I hope to publish. Enjoy!

  • ·        The Death of Our President : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today, My Dear Readers, I was confronted with the very reason that I started this blog back on March 22nd, 2010. Since the campaign that catapulted Senator Obama to become President Obama I have been troubled by voices. Voices coming from the extreme fringe of the Republican party. Elements of this radical fringe have engaged in hyperbolic rhetoric. They have created doubt about; the citizenship of President Obama, the legitimacy of his election, elements of his past, and even his (self-described) Christian religion.” I wrote this article today, and it was today that I saw the video of a woman demanding the execution of President Obama”. That she did so right in front of a sitting Republican Congressman, and he did nothing to discourage here bloodlust. As a matter of fact he actually encouraged her bloodlust and built on her hyperbolic rhetoric. THIS IS the reason that I started this blog back on March 22, 2010. EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW that it is Republicans that are sewing these seeds of hyper-partisanship, make no mistake. Further, the better President Obama does his job the more they feed this hyperbolic sickness. I have no problem with partisanship. It was designed into our system of governance for good reasons. However, hyper-partisanship is a disease that must be identified and rooted out where ever it is allowed to take hold. I simply cannot believe that a sitting Congressman encouraged an American citizen to demand that a President be executed” merely because they do not agree with his policies. That is not what it is to be an American. That is, very much, what it is to be a deeply disturbed American… I will write and stand against this kind of radical politics so long as I have life in my body and breath in my lungs. America deserves better than this disingenuous hyperbolic rhetoric being sewn into the very fabric of our nation merely for the propose of growing a hyper-partisan divide in our country.

.

That, My Dear Readers, brings us to the end of this edition of ‘A Week in Review’ and to the end of another week here at The Other Shoe. I hope that you have enjoyed reading, as much as I have enjoyed writing. I wish that I could bring you more, today. However, my hand is in terrific pain… as is my neck and all down my back and into my face. As well, I am without energy… I apologize, My Dear Readers…

.
