The Mars Report - April 22nd, 2016

.
Welcome back to The Other Shoe, My Dear Shoevians! I have decided to take a step away from all things ‘politics’ and ‘political’ heading into this weekend. With that in mind I am happy to bring you the very first edition of ‘The Mars Report’ in many months. Honestly, if feels good to put my head back into subject matter that has always made me smile… and think. Since I was a small boy of seven or eight, I dreamed of walking on the surface of another planetary body. I read the works of Clark, Asimov, and Heinlein while, in my head, turning their words into foreign lands. . This is, as I have said, the very first edition of ‘The Mars Report’ in many months. Having said, I am a bit out of ‘shape’ when it comes to writing this genera of works, this will end up being a bit of an abbreviated edition. I have four different images to share, and most of them are from months ago. Right now Curiosity is in a dormant mode. Hibernating through the Martian Winter where it is currently located. Below is a map showing the journey of Curiosity since it first landed at ‘Bradbury Landing’ back on August 22nd, 2012. Funny, that, My Dear Shoevians… I have covered the adventures and discoveries of Curiosity since it landed. I am glad that I made this project a priority for my writing and my blog(s).
 .
Curiosity Rover's Traverse, First 1,163 Sols on Mars                                        Curiosity Rover's Traverse, First 1,163 Sols on Mars.
(Curiosity Rover's Traverse, First 1,163 Sols on Mars)[2]
.
The map shown above highlights the route of the Curiosity rover. As it makes it way slowly from the beginning (at the top of the image, just to the left of ‘Yellowknife Bay’, to where it is halted just below ‘Marias Pass’. Curiosity is now located in the "Bagnold Dunes" dune field. The rover is making its way to higher elevations of Mount Sharp. The image, below, is of Curiosity at its stop in the ‘Bagnold Dunes in front of "Namib Dune".
.
Curiosity Self-Portrait at Martian Sand Dune                                                       Curiosity Self-Portrait at Martian Sand Dune.
(Curiosity Self-Portrait at Martian Sand Dune)[3]
.
This ‘Self Portrait’ is a combination of 57 images taken on Jan. 19, 2016, during the 1,228th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars. All of the 57 images were taken by the (not pictured) Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) at the end of the rover's robotic arm. Rather interesting, My Dear Shoevians, but as I was just writing this explanation of the image, above, I found a much better and far more recent map of Curiosity’s journey. I am including it, below.
. Curiosity's Traverse Map Through Sol 1221                                            Curiosity's Traverse Map Through Sol 1221.
(Curiosity's Traverse Map Through Sol 1221)[4]
.

Now, My Dear Shoevians, you should be able to just left click on this image and you will be taken to the full sized rending. In the larger image you will be able to read all of the different locations Curiosity has visited in its more than 1,000 day adventure, so far. At the bottom right corner, of this image, you will see the blue overlay. In this overlay you can see the ‘Namib Dune’ location, where self portrait (show above) was taken. It is marked, in the overlay, with a yellow diamond. That was the current location for the Curiosity rover of Sol 1221 (or the 1,221st day on the Martian Surface).

(Full-Circle Panorama Beside 'Namib Dune' on Mars)[5]
.

The image, above, appeared at the top of this article. However, I decided to include it in the body, too. This is the ‘360 Full Circleversion of the ‘Self Portrait’ captioned three images above. Now, My Dear Shoevians, as I have mentioned before you can left-click on any of these images and it will transfer your browser to another page that is just the full sized version of any given image. As well, there are footnotes at the bottom of the article. The number at the end of the caption, of any/all, images corresponds to the link at the bottom of the page. Click on a link to go to the credited page for each and every image. There you can, if you wish, download the High Definition version of any/all of the images included in my articles. . These high definition images make for great desktop wallpapers, or for any other image needs you may have, like sharing on Facebook or any of the other social media that you enjoy. Having said, I would like to ask all of you, My Dear Shoevians, to SHARE my articles (that you enjoy) via any/all the social media outlets that you enjoy. I am sure that all your; family, friends, and co-workers would enjoy seeing these images and learning of all our (hard earned) tax dollars at work!
 .
.
'Garden City' Site                                                                    'Garden City' Site
('Garden City' Site)[6]
.
That brings us to the image, above, our final image of this edition of “The Mars Report’ for April 22nd, 2016. This image was taken back in March of 2015 and shows a ridge at the bottom of Mount Sharp. The site’s name is ‘Garden City’ as shows a prominent network of mineral veins below a cap rock ridge. This rock ridge is located in the Pahrump section of the Lower Murray Formation of Mount Sharp. The mineral veins, pictured in this image are formed where fluids move through fractured rocks, depositing minerals in the fractures and affecting chemistry of the surrounding rock. In this case, the veins have been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding host rock. . The images that make up this mosaic view were taken by the left-eye camera of Mastcam (Mast Camera) on March 27, 2015, during the 938th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars. The image has been improved with white balancing so that the formation is seen as it would appear in natural light here on earth. Further image enhancement was accomplished by using Curiosity's laser-firing Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument. It was used to record the spectra of sparks generated by zapping 17 Garden City targets with the laser. Prior to taking this mosaic  the ChemCam team had completed the most extensive upgrade to the data-analysis toolkit (which the ChemCam is part) since Curiosity reached Mars in August 2012. The cap rock scarp, pictured here, is about three feet in height.
 .
That brings us to the end of this edition of ‘The Mars Report’ for April 22nd, 2016. I would like to take a moment to “Thank you!” all., My Dear Shoevians, for dropping by and reading this newest edition of ‘The Mars Report’. As I mentioned earlier in this article, I hope to have another edition of this series later next week. I have already located the images I would like to showcase, and many of them are very striking! They have been taken by the Mars Orbiting Observatory and display the harsh nature of a Martian winter. . Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. In closing, I would like to ask your indulgence. We all use social media of many types; Facebook, Pintrest, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram just to name a few. Now that you have read and (hopefully) enjoyed this article, today? Don’t you think that others (family, friends, co-workers) would enjoy it, too? Why not be the one that shares an informative article filled with eye-candy? I think that most people would be grateful to find enjoyable content on the web that isn’t all about politics and all things political. Be that person and share this article, and all my works, and bask in the light of their thanks.
 .
Thank you!
&
Be Good To One Another!

The Mars Report - August 3rd, 2015

.
Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. And, welcome to an abbreviated edition of‘The Mars Report’. This week, well, there just isn’t than many new images (yet) from the; Curiosity Rover, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and MARVEN. Our first image, at the top of the page, is an all new ‘Banner’ image I ‘borrowed’ from the NASA/JPL web site. Thought it might look nice, and add to the article as a whole. Let’s see if I get ‘sued’ for using it.
.
The image is of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that currently obits the Martian surface. This orbiter has provided all of you, My Dear Shoevians, with some spectacular images, one of which will appear right here today. Since its landing the Curiosity rover is tracked by this orbiter, and on more than one occasion I have shared an image, taken by this orbiter, of the Curiosity rover on the Martian surface.
.
Now, for our first image of this article, I mentioned that this is a shortened version of this article series, due to my commitments this week. As I promised this image was taken by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The orbiter, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), has detected deposits of glass within impact craters on Mars. The deposits are shown, in the image, as green colored.
.

(NASA Spacecraft Detects Impact Glass on Surface of Mars)
.
Now the interesting fact about this glass, and the reason that I have shared this image here today, is what is found in this ice.
.
During the past few years, research has shown evidence about past life has been preserved in impact glass here on Earth. A 2014 study led by scientist Peter Schultz of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, found organic molecules and plant matter entombed in glass formed by an impact that occurred millions of years ago in Argentina. Schultz suggested that similar processes might preserve signs of life on Mars, if they were present at the time of an impact.[2]
.
Like the “dino-DNA.. trapped in amber” (a la ‘Jurassic Park #1) this ice on the Martian surface could (easily) have trapped life forms from the surface at the time of impact. This give scientists are real opportunity to find out ‘was there life forms on Mars, before…?’. I am sure that the scientists, at NASA/JPL, have already put in their requests that future Martian landers make one of these sites a‘Must Visit’ site. The possibilities are astounding and limitless.
.
I have to tell you, My Dear Shoevians, this article may be short but images, like this one, are the reason that I write and publish this article series. The possibilities that come, when we explore our own solar system, are genuinely limitless. For as long as I breath air with these lungs, I will push my government and elected leaders to keep funding… advance funding for space exploration. With the challenge of ‘Climate Change’ becoming more and more evident every single day. Mankind must realize that the earth was our cradle, but it was never meant to be our grave.
.

(Frosty Gullies on the Northern Plains of Mars)
.
Now, My Dear Shoevians, what we see before us (above) is large gullies of ice crystals on the Martian surface. Just like snow, here on Earth, ice forms during the winter months on the Martian surface. The biggest difference between the ice, here on Earth, to the ice formed on the Martian surface is composition. Here on Earth ice is formed by freezing H2O, whereas on the Martian surface it comes from frozen Co2 (Carbon Dioxide). Creating Dry Ice. Now the temperature that Co freezes is at -80.5 C (-113F ). That is some seriously cold air. You can rule out taking a Christmas Ride to Grandma’s in an Open Sleigh during a Martian winter! The image, acquired on April 11, 2015, by theHigh Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, shows frost in gully alcoves in a crater on the Northern plains.
.

(NASA Mars Orbiter Preparing for Mars Lander's 2016 Arrival)
.
There she is, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (well, an Artist’s Rendering). On July 29th, 2015 NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter successfully completed a maneuver to put the spacecraft in the right place on Sept. 28, 2016, for supporting arrival of the InSight Mars lander mission. This is the, previously featured here at The Other Shoe[5], ‘Insight Martian Lander’. ‘Insight’ is set to land, on the Martian surface, on September 28th, 2016 (right before our Presidential election, FYI).
.

(InSight spacecraft solar array deployment)
.
Which brings us, My Dear Shoevians, to the final image of the day, for this edition of ‘The Mars Report’.  For the very first time mankind has more orbiting objects circling Mars. The image, below, shows the flight paths of the five orbiters must be carefully monitored. Last year's addition of two new spacecraft orbiting Mars brought the census of active Mars orbiters to five, the most ever. They are; NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) and India's Mars Orbiter Mission joined the 2003 Mars Express from ESA (the European Space Agency) and two from NASA: the 2001 Mars Odyssey and the 2006 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).
.

(Traffic Around Mars Gets Busy!)
.
“It's not just the total number that matters, but also the types of orbits missions use for achieving their science goals. MAVEN, which reached Mars on Sept. 21, 2014, studies the upper atmosphere. It flies an elongated orbit, sometimes farther from Mars than NASA's other orbiters and sometimes closer to Mars, so it crosses altitudes occupied by those orbiters. For safety, NASA also monitors positions of ESA's and India's orbiters, which both fly elongated orbits.[8]
.
That brings us, My Dear Shoevians, to the end of another edition of ‘The Mars Report’. As always, I hope that you have enjoyed your time spent here, today. If you have, Please be sure to ‘Like’ and‘Share’ this article with all your social media. That way all of your; family, friends, and Facebook friends can enjoy this work, too. I will be off, tomorrow (August 4th 2015) for a ‘Journey to L.A.’!
.
Yes, it is that time again, where I make the 13 hour round trip to Rolling Hills Estates to see my primary/coordinating Care Physician. Once I have recovered from that adventure, I will be back right here providing you, My Dear Shoevians, with more and more articles to read and ENJOY!
.
Adieu!
.
Thank you!

A Week in Review - May 10th, 2015

Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. I have to openly admit, this week was fraught with pain and problems! Mid-week I was struck with some terrific pain, all through my neck and into my arms and head. I tried sleeping it away, I tried soaking it away and all to no avail. Finally, I just settled in for a long hard ride and decided to do as little as I could around the house… … … and to let the blogs… sit. THAT was a very difficult decision, My Dear Shoevians.

.

After a seven month absence I was seeing traffic numbers, for a week’s time, up to One Hundred Nineteen!!! That translates to a yearly traffic of well over SIX THOUSAND!!!!! That is some serious traffic numbers to take to a publisher… with a truly original and touching novel in hand. It wasn’t easy but I took Tuesday and Wednesday off. I re-published my Hubble’s 25th Anniversary’ on Wednesday, then it happened.

.

This happens every six to eight months, at my location at blog dot com, the whole bloody web site just crashes! So, I wait and wait and wait. GONE for three days! I did not ‘see’ my primary blog location for three days, until today! So, here I am trying my hardest to play catch-up with the missed publication of the ‘Traffic Reports’ band now this ‘A Week in Review’. Now, I am tired and hurting all over again. But this will pass. I have to manage to finish this weekly review, and then publish ‘Sunday Funnies’ before it is no longer Sunday!

.

So, without further adieu, I give you ‘A Week in Review – May 10th, 2015’!

  • Sunday Funnies – Gryphon’s Premiere! – “Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. Today is a extra special edition of ‘Sunday Funnies’! Today I would like to ask you, My Dear Shoevians, to join me in Welcoming Gryphon D. Hannning (click on the hyperlink to go to Gryphon’s Facebook Page!) to this storied article series. As most of you are aware… … … Alexander R. Hanning passed away, several weeks ago, after a long battle with failing health. I made him as comfortable as possible, prepared all his favorite foods, and held him 24/7 for his comfort. He was loved deeply, and will be even more deeply missed. Last edition of ‘Sunday Funnies’ was a homage to Alexander.” This, My Dear Shoevians, was a very difficult article for me to write and publish. You see, it was an end, of sorts. An end to the era of Alexander R. Hanning as the star of ‘Sunday Funnies’ and the beginning of an all new era of Gryphon D. Hannning as the new star. I never do well with endings… of anything, but especially of the furry little ones I come to care for and love. There will never be a day… a time when I stop thinking of Alexander. He had that big an impact on my life, my work, my soul. It was Alexander that was at my side when I was diagnosed with cancer. It was Alexander that was at my side when I came home after chemotherapy. It was Alexander that stayed by my side when I got sick, and was there no matter what happened. However, this article was the premiere for another furry friend, Gryphon D. Hannning. This is Gryphon’s premiere video and premiere edition of ‘Sunday Funnies’. I hope that everyone stopped by to enjoy his premiere and his antics. Enjoy!

  • The Mars Report – May 4th, 2015 – “Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. Today marks the beginning of my third week back at; researching, writing, editing and publishing here at The Other Shoe. That is an important milestone for me, as just a few months ago (about mid-way through my chemotherapy treatments) I wondered if I would ever return to writing and publishing again. Well, not at all, what I mean is I doubted that I would ever again publish on a regular schedule again. Now, here I am two weeks past and over a dozen articles under my belt since my ‘The Rebirth and Re-Launch of The Other Shoe’ article of April 13th, 2015.” It was this Gargantuan edition of ‘The Mars Report’ that I think put me over the edge and into a world of hurt. The singles largest edition, with the most images, the most conetnet and the most science ever! If you haven’t looked at this edition, you should! Enjoy!

  • Lost in Space – Hubble’s 25th – Redux – “So good, worth republishing today! I’m taking a day of R&R, here’s a wonderful celebration of Hubble’s 25th anniversary. Enjoy! Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. Today is Wednesday April 22nd, 2015 and when I started the research for this article I quickly became aware that today is the 25th Anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope! What a glorious day to pay tribute to this wonder of the modern age, by sharing some of the most recent images captured by Hubble.” With the pain in my neck reaching new levels of blinding pain, I decided to give myself a day to rest and recover. Little did I know that the primary blog location would take this opportunity to go AWOL! Nevertheless, this edition is/was worth republishing, so I did! ENJOY!

.

  • Traffic Reports – May 7th, 2015 “Now that I have the news out of the way, let me get to the meat of this article. As many of you, My Dear Shoevians, know about every six months I publish a ‘Traffic Report’. Now, I do this for many reasons, not the least of which is that I enjoy sharing the limited success of my writing. Yes, I work hard at; research, writing, editing and publishing at The Other Shoe. When I see the traffic counter on the Blog Dot com location stay over one hundred for a week or more… YES I am very very proud! That has occurred over the past two weeks.” This was a very enlightening edition of ‘Traffic Reports’. Whereas I did see the corresponding decline in readership during my chemotherapy, if you don’t publish new content, readers go elsewhere, that is a given. However, there is ‘Good News’ in this report, too! Good news in the discovery of even more expanded international readership! THAT is very ‘Good News’ indeed! If you need a reason to read this article, learning that My Dear Shoevians live in; England, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and evern RUSSIA should do the trick, eh? Read and be informed!

.

That, My Dear Shoevians, brings us to the end of this article and the end of the week’s publishing. I hope that everyone takes some time, out of your Sunday, to go back and read and view some of the wonderful work and images I shared this past week. Again, I apologize for the absence, made even longer by the down time at the primary blog location. I am back, and I have a “Sunday Funnies’ yet to publish, today.

.

I regret to inform you that this week is my ‘Quarterly Visit To L.A.’ and my primary care physician, Dr. Laurence Gorlick. This journey into L.A., and back, takes a great deal out of me. It is a journey that takes, Allen and I, more than twelve hours of transit van rides to get into Rancho Palos Verde, and back here to Orange County. I will do my best to keep up my writing schedule, I just cannot make any promises I might not keep.

.

Thank you!

.

Adieu!

Returning to The Other Shoe

[caption id="attachment_3778" align="aligncenter" width="225"]Danny Rolling Hills Estates - November 2014 Danny Rolling Hills Estates - November 2014[/caption]

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. It has been three weeks since my last publication. Just like the old saying goes; my mind and heart are willing, but the flesh is weak. Today, well it has been a little over two weeks since my last chemo, I am feeling able to write and publish. My next chemo is a week from Wednesday, December 17th. That will be my last chemo, this year.

.

My Dear Readers it has been my intention to get back into the swing of publishing on a regular basis. The (harsh) reality is? I will be unable to meet my previous publication schedule while I am in chemo. Once this round of chemo is complete, I am hopeful that I will be able to return to a regular full schedule of publications. That is barring any unforeseen complications post chemo. I have no intention of abandoning this blog, or my writing, anytime soon.

.

The Martian rover, Curiosity, is still working making new discoveries. Therefore, ‘The Mars Report’ will return and continue. I still enjoy discovering and researching News from Around the World” assuring the continuation of the article series of the same name. I still enjoy PC & console gaming, assuring the continuation of ‘MMORPG’s and YOU!’. Timmy and Archer still live in my heart, and often (still) play in my mind. YES! I hard really hoped to have their first story complete… this year. However, I have continued adding plot lines, character development, and tie-ins for future publications.

.

I can tell you one (SPOILER ALERT!) fact about; Timmy, Archer and Smithville. They (all) will be the setting for a second story… this time set at Christmas! Yes, so you My Dear Readers can see just why I really wanted to finish my first story… so I could start sharing excerpts of the upcoming second book… just in time for Christmas! Not going to tell you, My Dear Readers, anymore than that… don’t want to spoil the end of my current story.

.

This week I hope to write and publish a current edition of ‘The Mars Report’. I have, already, researched Curiosity’s recent endeavors and discoveries and there is a good deal to share and report. As well, I think that (if I am up to it) there will be another edition of ‘News from Around the World’ released later in the week. I have just one appointment, this week, then chemo starts next week.

.

For EVERYONE that keeps dropping by…. EVERYONE that kept visiting and reading? THANK YOU! It is very encouraging to see traffic reports that show… many of you, My Dear Readers, just keep coming and reading and sharing and enjoying The Other Shoe. It is my heartfelt desire to make your visits… worthwhile. To reward all of you, My Dear Readers, for your support and patronage.

.

In closing, I will do my very best to write and publish as much as I am able. Do my very best to publish as often and as regularly as my health and flesh allow. I do miss writing… publishing and seeing the comments and ‘Like’(s) and Shares from all of you, My Dearest Readers. Most of all… I just want to get back to doing that which I can… to continue to contribute… in the only way I have left to me.

.

Adieu!

.

Thank you!

A Week in Review - July 19th 2014

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. If it is Saturday, it is time for ‘A Week in Review’ at The Other Shoe! First, I am still having problems with my primary blog location at Blog Dot Com. If you go to the site and experience errors, 502, ‘Bad Gateway’, or the like just please refresh the page and it should appear. I am continuing to write and ask for technical support. Next, due to failing health, and the corresponding depression, this week was a little shy on publications.

.

[caption id="attachment_3247" align="aligncenter" width="630"]502 - Bad Gateway Error 502 - Bad Gateway Error[/caption]

.

Including today’s article I will have brought five articles to you, My Dear Readers, in seven days. That is not bad, but it is far from what I am used to bringing to you, and what I expect of myself. Granted, My Dear Readers, that in the past seven days? I have taught myself some of the basics of animation! As you will see, in this review of this week, I have ventured into an all new medium!

.

Starting, this week, I have added animation to The Other Shoe! Granted for right now my work product has been limited to creating logos for one of the most popular article series. Hopefully, in the near future, I will add ‘Sunday Funnies’ that is an animation that I have done all by myself! You see, My Dear Readers, I am always looking for ways to improve the blog, entertain you more, and really make a go of this blog and my writing and publications.

.

Animation has always fascinated me, and today that is just as true as when I was a boy. Now that I have access to a software program, that helps and tutorials, I am finding that the art of animation is not really all that daunting! It is time consuming, most of all. Whereas I can write, and publish, written word in one day? Creating, executing and publishing an animation can take up, and exceeding, a week for just a matter of a few minutes.

.

Finally, I had promised to publish two episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ this week, when I published the ‘Missing Chapters’ on Thursday. I apologize that when push came to shove I was unable to publish the two episodes that I promised. For that I deeply apologize. I will work hard to see if I can make that happen, this week. However, Tuesday I am scheduled to see (at least one) doctor to review the results of the C.T. Scan I had done last week.

.

Honestly, just how much I manage to accomplish will (greatly) depend on if I get ‘Good News’ or ‘Bad News’. Sorry! I do not expect to publish on Tuesday, as getting to my doctor’s appointment(s) usually shoots a whole day. However, I will try to make sure I have more content, for you My Dear Readers, this week. Thank you for your understanding and support through this difficult time.

.

Now, without further adieu I give you ‘A Week in Review’!

.

  • A Week in Review – 500th Articles A Week’s Celebration! : “So I decided to write an edition of ‘A Week in Review’ to cover the week of celebratory articles for the publication of my FIVE HUNDREDTH ARTICLE! Yeah, I am very proud to have reached this milestone in publication. I do not know of many other people that have written and published over five hundred articles… much les in just four short years. IT was my pride that pushed me to write so very much last week. I am pretty certain that the push to publish is the reason for my woes.” I really am hoping that the lower, than expected and ‘normal’, traffic numbers are more to do with the problems with the web site and Blog Dot Com than… with me. I really am pushing myself… writing when I am in pain and working just as hard as my body allows. Granted, the depression has become rather crushing… as of late. However, I am hoping the Tuesday has ‘Good News’ that will chase away these storm clouds and give me a more ‘sunny’ disposition!

  • Daniel Hanning Breaks into an All NEW Medium! : “Over the past several days I have been teaching myself… … … (drum roll, please!) ANIMATION! That’s right, over the past several days I have been working to learn the basics of Animation! I have struggled, over the past several weeks, over just what I could add to The Other Shoe? Add so that I might drive more traffic to my site. The other day I was talking with a good friend and they asked me…” “Danny what can you add to the blog that you ENJOY and might drive more traffic?” ANIMATION! Well, it didn’t happen exactly like that… but it was close! Regardless, here I am presenting (in this article) my work product from a week of; reading, watching tutorial videos, experimenting, and ‘getting my feet wet’ in the world of animation! Already I can tell you, My Dear Readers, animation is something that I will work with… dabble in and play with for the rest of my life! This week, alone, has shown that I can ‘do’ animation, that I enjoy working with animation, and that I will be able to find a way to work it into my articles and publications at The Other Shoe! SCORE!

  • The Mars Report – July 16th 2014 : “Now, for the first share of this edition, we are rapidly approaching the Second Anniversary of Curiosity on the Martian surface. That anniversary will happen on August 6th, 2014. So, we are just a few weeks away from that celebration. Before we get to that day, I thought that I might share a little overview of the First Year of Curiosity on Mars. Below is a video, that NASA/JPL made, that is a great overview of the very first year of Curiosity on the Martian surface.” Well, My Dear Readers, this was an extra-special edition of ‘The Mars Report’! Not only was I able to share the ‘Special’ commemorative video, by NASA/JPL, used to mark/celebrate Curiosity’s First Year on Mars? I was, also, able to share images of Curiosity’s discovery (its first) of a meteorite on Mars! As if that is not enough? I also included the very first complete mapping of the Martian surface by the USGS! This map is the very first of its kind and a real find for me and this blog. Over the next two weeks I am hoping to share a lot more from Curiosity to help celebrate its Second year of exploration on the Martian surface!

  • The Horror in Smithville – The ‘Missing’ Chapters! : “Now today I am not breaking with that publication schedule, but I am shaking things up a little. Today I am going to publish… a missing chapter of ‘The Horror in Smithville’. Missing in that when I, originally, wrote parts two and three I had not yet imagined just how I was going to create the conflict I needed. Since that time I have figured out just how to create the desired effect in my story. That has resulted in me writing two (or more) chapters that, actually, come earlier than we currently find ourselves!” Honestly? My Dear Readers, this is really pretty exciting, for me. I am doing… something that is completely out of the ‘norm’ for a writer, or a publisher. By adding these ‘Missing Chapters’ WHILE we are still enjoying the ride? (We are about half-way through this novel) I am adding; a whole new character… well, rather, promoting a background character to one with his own plot line, character development, and iatrical role in the main story line. This is what I am talking about, I have never witnessed an author actually try something like this… like, ever before! Thing of it is? If this works… is well received, then I have TWO more characters that I would just LOVE to do this same exercise, with. This, for me as a writer and publisher, is really exciting. I hope that everyone that is enjoying ‘The Horror in Smithville’ gets a chance to read ALL of these ’Missing Chapters’!

.

Well, My Dear Readers, that brings us to the end of a very short publication week, and a very long week in reality. Now I need to start getting together had copies of images from my scan, put together the clothes that I will wear, call and order my transportation, and generally get ‘ready’ for my doctor’s visit this Tuesday. From what I was told I will be ‘seeing’ two doctors this Tuesday.

.

I will see my ‘Infectious Disease’ specialist and I will, also, have a visit with my ‘Oncologist’. It is the latter that gives me pause, and the reason I am not sleeping. You know, My Dear Readers, I forgot how writing takes my mind off of these woes! While I have writing I haven’t given as much thought… well, except for writing about it every other paragraph… lol.

.

Anyways, I really hope that I can get the time… make the time to write and publish editions of; ‘Lost in Space’, ‘The Mars Report’, ‘News from Around the World’ (BOY there is no shortage of that right now, eh?), and ‘The Horror in Smithville’ this week. I want you all to know that I am going to do everything that I can to present these regular articles to you, this week.

.

Let me back up, a bit. I added a day of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ for one very good reason. When I got past the thirty or so pages I have ready to publish, I realized that I had totally left out; a character progression, a plot line addition, and a little bit of ‘drity business’ that… well, is very important to the story going ahead. Rather than just bluff my way through and ignore the consequences?

.

I decided it would be best if I did my best to integrate the ‘Missing Chapters’ into my weekly publication schedule. That would give all of you more of the story to read, and give me a way to bring the whole picture to life! It is a great idea, if I say so myself, the problem was I had failed to anticipate my failing health… the problems with the blog… and that irritating little distraction called depression. Lol.

.

My Dear Readers, I will do my best to bring you the two episodes of ‘The Horror in Smithville’ that I have promised. I just know that, once it is published, you will just love what I am adding to the story line. Further, we all get to know another character in Smithville! Well, that brings us to the end of this week’s publications… and the end of the week.

.

I hope that everyone had a great and productive week. I look forward to seeing you, My Dear Readers, here next week! Until then…

.

Adieu!

.

Thank YOU!

400th Article at The Other Shoe - Part Four

[caption id="attachment_671" align="aligncenter" width="630"]Curiosity RAW/Natural/White Balanced image from Curiosity[/caption]

.

Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. This is Part Four of the series of article celebrating my 400th article here at The Other Shoe. Now, My Dear Readers, I have taken you back to the very beginnings of this love of mine, The Other Shoe. I have shared retrospect of several of the successful series I have published over the years. Today, I am devoting this Part Four to a look back over the series The Mars Report.

.

Started the day of (or the day after) Curiosity made a soft-landing on the surface of Mars at Bradbury Point. I published over a dozen articles of The Mars Report. On October 4th, 1957 Sputnik was launched from the former U.S.S.R. and, just weeks later Daniel Hanning was born. I am, quite literally, a child of the ‘Space Age’.

.

My curiosity for all things space and extraterrestrial I have had an unquenchable thirst. The Mars Report was a natural extension of that unquenchable thirst and a tall glass of relief, too. Since my reading of ‘The Martian Chronicles’ (by Ray Bradbury – Namesake of the landing zone of the rover Curiosity on Mars) I have viewed Mars through deeply curious eyes. We now know that liquid water flowed on the surface of Mars.

.

The presence of liquid water tells us that, at some point in the past, Mars had an atmosphere. Of all the extraterrestrial bodies, in our solar system, Mars is the best candidate for Terraforming. That the moon may be mankind’s first celestial body/space, that Mars is the only logical starting point for any travel outside our solar system. Regardless of mankind’s ability to see, today, the eventual role Mars will play in our evolution. Mars will be a huge stepping-stone from which mankind will launch himself into the stars.

.

Today, with this Part Four of the celebratory series of articles for the 400th publication here at The Other Shoe. I chose to highlight The Mars Report series of articles. Therefore, without further adieu, I bring you a short history of my scientific series The Mars Report!

.

  • Curiosity’s First Images from Mars : “This Saturday (August 5th, 2012) NASA and JPL reached the climax of the current Mars Lander/rover project, Curiosity. I was watching, on JPL web TV as the ‘Seven Minutes of Terror’ culminated with America putting the largest and most sophisticated rover on the surface of Mars. The one ton Curiosity has its own; nuclear reactor, laser drill, 20″ tires, and ten scientific instruments and High Definition cameras. Just released today, 3D images coming from Curiosity. Looking at them, I think we will all need to dig up our ‘Red/Blue’ 3D glasses to enjoy these gems.” This article is the beginning of The Mars Report. It was not until later in the series that I ‘landed’ (pun, intended) on the current title for the series; The Mars Report. I really did sit and watch, via internet broadcast on the JPL Web site, the Mars Lander successfully place Curiosity on the Martian surface @ Bradbury Point. Curiosity represented the single heaviest non-human payload ever deposited on extraterrestrial soil. They accomplished this task with the very first use of a ‘Sky Crane’ that hovered over the landing site and slowly lowered the Curiosity package to a successful soft-landing. I think I might have held my breath the majority of the ‘Seven Minutes of Terror’ along with the staff/crew at JPL. The successful accomplishment of this task has opened huge vista of exploration for NASA/JPL, and mankind. After witnessing the landing… I just knew that I had to write about the adventure Curiosity had just embarked. I had to involve and inform you, My Dear Readers, of this Herculean effort and journey. I am write happy I did.

  • Curiosity Update – The Mars Report – September 1st 2012: “This is our first ‘The Mars Report’ for the month of September, 2012. Since I wrote, last, the rover has moved! Yes, Curiosity has moved from the landing zone and is starting the longest journey of any extraterritorial vehicle in the history of mankind. If Spirit and Opportunity are good examples, we will be seeing Curiosity roving and taking samples and pictures in 2020. Curiosity has his own nuclear power plant and supplemental solar power, too. So, I am sitting here and looking at the images that I have uploaded for today’s article, trying to figure out which I should lead with, what image comes first? The ‘Vanity’ shot, of course! Here is an image, from the Curiosity rover, showing the tracks it has made in the Martian soil. You can clearly see the robotic arm, in the foreground, with Curiosity’s name.” This is, like, the second or third of this series. It is the first edition where I have panoramic (HD) images to post with the article. I have started to incorporate more and more of the information from the NASA/JPL web site into the descriptions of the images. Basically, I am honing my work and improving the quality of the articles in this series. Now, I am a long way from the level of work I am publishing now. However, already I am seeing that The Mars Report has the ability to drive a lot of traffic to my blog. That is welcome news, at this point, as I am (at the time of it first publication) I was working hard to raise the funds I needed for my power chair. I really do wish I could repeat that success, now. I would really like to eat on a regular basis.

  • Mid-May The Mars Report: “Welcome back, My Dear Readers, to the Mid-May edition of The Mars Report here @ The Other Shoe. It is a genuine pleasure to bring you this edition of The Mars Report. Reason? This is a special edition devoted to panoramic shots of the surface of Mars! This article has NO: rocks, drilled holes, tire tracks or self-portraits (well… maybe just one shot of the rover Curiosity… Have to give her props for what she does!). So without further adieu I bring you the plains and mountain of our sister planet, Mars.” At the time of the publication of this article, Curiosity had found its way out onto open areas. This allowed for huge panoramic views from the mast camera and I spared no time sharing these breath-taking views with you, My Dear Readers. This article was the very first to include a self-portrait of/by Curiosity. This series was getting better with every edition, and I was all too happy to see the corresponding increases in traffic.

  • The Mars Report in 3D! : “Welcome, My Dear Readers, to the 3D issue of The Mars Report here @ The Other Shoe. This entire issue will contain nothing but three-dimensional images from curiosity on Mars. I have wanted to bring a three-dimensional issue to you, My Dear Readers, but until this week the NASA JPL website just did not have enough images. That situation changed this week.” This edition of The Mars Report was my very first 3-D publication. I explained what kind of glasses you needed to find/use to see the images in full three-dimensions. The article received a fair amount of traffic and 19 ‘Like’s. I did not repeat this type of article. I was concerned that you, My Dear Readers, might have difficulty finding the right type of 3D glasses to full enjoy the technology. This article shows the creativity and joy that writing and publishing this series brought me. I continued to publish this series, up until my health became more of an issue… and a hindrance.

  • The Mars Report – January 30, 2014 : “Welcome back My Dear Readers to The Other Shoe. Today I am ushering in the return of one of Today I am ushering in the return of one of my favorite series of articles; The Mars Report. I remember when I announced, right here at The Other Shoe, that the rover Curiosity had successfully landed on the surface of Mars. That was more than 500 days ago, and now I bring you the most up-to-date news from Curiosity and Mars.” This issue of The Mars Report signals the, hopeful, return of this series to The Other Shoe. Curiosity has traveled a great distance, since last we checked in on the rover. We are no approaching the ‘Dingo Gap’ looking for the safest approach to Mount Sharp. In the images included in this issue you can clearly see the foothills (of Mount Sharp) in the background. The panoramic images are still breath-taking and a real draw. I hope that I can continue to update this series on a regular basis, and bring all of us more and more news from the Martian Surface.

.

That brings us to the end of this, Part Four of ‘400th Article at The Other Shoe. I am working on bringing you the Conclusion of this celebratory series, this weekend. I will bring together all the content from all five of the series in a way that showcases the very best of my blog’s first 400 articles and four years.

.

I am hoping that my health holds out, until I am finished with this review. Today I am making a venture into Anaheim to help Allen with the resolution of a legal matter. It will be a long day, starting at 6AM and I will get done about 6PM. I hope that everyone has enjoyed this retrospect of 400 articles and four years here at The Other Shoe.

.

My Dear Readers, I consider it a responsibility as well as a joy to write and publish for your entertainment and education. I will always work just as hard as my body and pain allows. I hope that you have enjoyed this retrospect of The Mars Report and I look forward to bringing more of the Martian adventure to you, soon.

.

As always I am deeply honored that you come here and read my work.

.

Thank YOU!
