A Week in Review - May 2nd, 2015

.

Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. This week was a rather light week for writing, as I was experiencing increased pain and more limited mobility. I always strive to publish between four and seven articles, each and every week. This week (including this article) I published the minimum of four articles. Honestly I was surprised at this fact when it came time, today, to prepare this weekly review. I know that I missed the publication of ‘The Mars Report’ on Monday, and I think that put me behind the eight ball for the rest of the week.

.

Looking back, which it what I do on Saturdays, I now can see where I pushed much too hard on one article (early in the week) and that left me in pain for days afterward. ‘The Death of American Exceptionalism’ was the article that put me in so much pain, and put me behind schedule. When you look at the numbers, it is easy to see why. Written in Word that article stretched through twenty-four pages and weighed in at over 5,500 words! I didn’t realize that, until just now when I ran the word count in Word. J

.

I really should have known better than to tackle a editorial piece of that length so shortly after returning to writing and publishing. Oh well, a lesson learned the hard way is a lesson not soon forgot. Right? Honestly, to help put that into perspective? My average article weighs in at about 1,700 to 2,000 words. This week’s ‘New from Around the World’ weighed in at 1,700 words and just eight pages in length. Ok, My Dear Shoevians, I will not do that again and put all my eggs into one basket. I assure you that you can look forward to an all new edition of ‘The Mars Report’, ‘Lost in Space’, News from Around the World’, Sunday Funnies’ and ‘A Week in Review’ in this upcoming week.

.

Now, without further adieu… I give you ‘A Week in Review’ for the week of April 26th, 2015!

  • The Death of ‘American Exceptionalism’ : “Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. It is with a heavy heart, and with much trepidation, I write this article and bring it to you, My Dear Shoevians. The title, alone, took me weeks to… discover. While I wanted to draw in readers, I felt a responsibility to convey the seriousness of the problem, without scaring readers away. I am a proud American, proud Texan, and proud journalist. I cannot tell you just how many times, in any given day, these three convictions clash. It is more times, in a given day, than I find comfort.” Writing this article was far more difficult than I imagined during research. Yes, as I mentioned above, it was more painful than I could have ever imagined, but that is not the only pain I experienced. It pained me personally… as an American to challenge a “life-Long’ perception of the nation and people I love. Growing up in Texas (the ‘Buckle of the Bible Belt’) from the late 50’s through the 70’s I was raised with the perception that America excelled at everything! Researching this article… that illusion was dashed to the ground. It is not that America was ‘never’ exceptional, it is that over the past fifteen years a shift in our priorities, and a corresponding shift in wealth and opportunities into the hands of the few (in many cases the very few = 0.2%). This unprecedented shift of; wealth, opportunities, education, and even food has precipitated a downward spiral. America’s youth have fallen from (as recently as the 90’s) from the top 10th percentile to 25th to 36th in the world. Our Middle Class have been squeezed out of existence by a meager 0.2% increase in income over the past decade. Fewer and fewer of our high school graduates can go to college, because fewer and fewer parents can afford the expense and/or debt load.

  • Lost in Space – The Messenger Mission : “Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. Today I am excited to bring you a Special Edition of ‘Lost in Space’. The ‘Messenger’ mission! NASA’s Messenger ((MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) mission was launched August 3rd, 2004. The Messenger spacecraft traveled 4.9 billion miles, including; 16 trips around the sun, two around Venus, and one fly-by of Earth, settled into orbit around Mercury in 2011.” I must admit that until I started my research, for this article, I was mostly unfamiliar with NASA’s Messenger mission and spacecraft. That is no longer the truth, in a big way! Launched August 3rd, 2004 (I was distracted by the loss of my best job ever and growing neurological problems and deficits)Messenger traveled 8 billion miles to arrive at Mercury and send back to mankind the most incredible images ever seen by human eyes. In this article I have done my best to give you My Dear Shoevians a good overview of its mission at Mercury. However, I was forced to leave out all the; images, encounters and scientific discoveries Messenger made during its eleven year journey of discovery. I hope that one day soon I will be able to devote another edition of “Lost in Space’ to the Messenger mission and share even more of its accomplishments. Until that time, drop by and give this article a good read and enjoy the incredible images from Messenger of Mercury!

  • News from Around the World – May 1st, 2015 : “Welcome back My Dear Shoevians to The Other Shoe. IT is Friday, May 1st, 2015 and this is the very first edition of ‘News From Around the World’ in a very long time. I always enjoyed writing and publishing this article series. It took my mind off of the political works I was engaged, and the acrimonious tone of ‘Conservative’ rhetoric. As well, it helped me keep in touch with the happenings outside the borders of our great nation. Sometimes, it is difficult for us Americans to admit, or to realize, that we are but one nation among many. But one voice in the symphony of human thought and action that is the human experience.” This edition of ‘News from Around the World’ was a big departure, for me. Usually I tackle three to five different stories from three to five different parts of the world. However, when I started my research for this week’s edition… one story kept jumping in my path. NEPAL! The horrific earthquake that struck the Katmandu Valley of Nepal captured my attention, and my heart. The immense suffering, the terrible loss and the overwhelming scenes of devastation were unlike any I have seen in my lifetime. I was so deeply moved I had no choice but to focus the entire edition on this subject, and the cumulative attentions of all of you, My Dear Shoevians. I tried my hardest to not appear to capitalize on their suffering, but to merely relay the extent of the devastation and the depth of their loss and grief. At the end of the article I provide links to several aid organizations for you, My Dear Shoevians, to use if you are of the mind.

.

With that, My Dear Shoevians, I bring this week’s edition of ‘A Week in Review’ to a close. It is early Saturday morning, and I hope to get some much needed rest, before I start on tomorrow’s edition of ‘Sunday Funnies’. I hope to see you al right here, tomorrow, for Gryphon’s premier right here in the pages of tomorrow’s ‘Sunday Funnies’. Until lthen…

.

Thank you!

.

Adieu!

I’ll Be Seeing You, Again, Soon

I’ll Be Seeing You, Again, Soon…

Welcome back My Dearest Readers to The Other Shoe. I have been away for six days, not without good reason. On July 11 of this year I started a campaign to raise money to help me move. A very successful campaign, I might add. However, since I started that campaign I have not taken time away for myself. In the past six months I; was forced to move from a place I called home for a decade, watched a man I dearly love work to undermine his best efforts and destroy his life in slow motion, did everything I could to raise enough money to move alone if need be, packed the majority of my home by myself (which, in my condition, was; terrifying, painful, and humiliating), moved, lost, and worked the very fiber of my being to regain myself and what little status I had in the community I choose to express myself.

.

Life deciding, that not being enough, all along I was in a quiet battle with my own pain. Since right before Allen left my pain has been on a steady path increase in severity and how long it visits me. Going hand in hand with this debilitating pain are frequent fevers, severe headaches, and intense burning sensation in my neck… Like someone pouring lava down the back of my head. Through all that, My Dear Readers, I have done my best to do two things. First, never stop writing. As a boy I thought choir was my voice, as a young man I thought the stage would be my voice, as a middle-aged man you hear my voice right here. Second, ‘show no pain’… Thanks Dad.

.

I hope I have succeeded, My Dear Readers. For of all that which I wished to share with you my pain-and-suffering are not numbered among them. All along in the background I been searching for my voice. Who am I? Am I a humorist? Doubtful I don’t find what going on America amusing in the slightest nor do I find any humor in the life I’ve been left to lead. Am I a humanist? Definitely I look at today and I can compare it to the other time I know best in my life. The 60s.

.

When the 60s began I was three years old. By the time it was all over; three great Americans had been struck down in the ;rime of thier lives, America had put men on the moon, African-Americans were full citizens with the right to vote, and I was a teenager. America faces similarly difficult times right now today. Am I a humanist? Damn right I am!

.

But that’s not enough, My Dear Readers, everybody’s got have a hook. In three years I have written 308 articles. Literally tens of thousands of; Americans, Asians, Mediterranean’s, people from all over this good Earth have visited my blog and read my words. Not shabby.

.

But I owe you more. And more is what you will get. My battle with my disability and pain will continue unabated, until I draw my last breath. But something else will continue as well, My Dear Readers, this blog, my writing, and ‘The Adventures of Princess Nadia’. Because you see all along I’m working on my tail. You want to know what irony is? To speech program wrote T A I L not T A L E That’s ironic.

.

My Dear Readers, I wish I could be here several times every day. If I had a staff, if I had an editor, if I had anyone on God’s green earth any kind of help with these two blogs I’d be writing to you several times a day and publishing. I love you all so much. You are the reason I get up in the morning, you’re the reason I endure the pain, you’re the reason I breathe today. If I’m not here on these pages it’s not because I don’t want to be. If I’m not here, more times than not, it’s because I cannot be. And for that, I apologize.

.

Hopefully, starting later today I’m going to be writing with more of a direction. Right now I’m fixing to go… to go, to the biweekly… triweekly? Every two days. Process of removing a pain patch and putting on a new one. A simple process, eh? If they made these darn things worth a damn it would be. However, we live in reality and the damn things are made for profit so it takes me a good two hours to get one to stick.

.

As soon as that is done, My Dear Readers, I will return here and talk with you more. Oh how I love talking to you... you are the future... you do realize that, right? All of us. Young, old, teen, 20 something, African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, Latino, we are the future.

.

A humanist is a man or woman who looks at the world around them and says to themselves “we can do better”. I know we can, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. Hopefully, My Dear Readers, over the next days, weeks, months, years I will share with you how we can all do it better. I’ll share with you how even though the 60s were an era of assassinations, we did the human part right. And how, today we are really screwing up the human part. Oh Lord we know how to make money Lordy yes! But in the pursuit of avarice mankind has traded humanity… Humility… The art of being a human is being traded it for the art of being wealthy at someone else’s expense.

.

You see, no one ever tells you that. Prior to meeting Allen, and after I left Pearland Texas. A little city krpt drawing me back to its borders. No matter where I looked for a job, no matter where I chose to live this little city kept calling me back to its borders. That little city? That little city was… Beverly Hills. You can’t really work, live, eat, play in the city of Beverly Hills without getting to know wealthy people, wealth, money and the God of it all avarice.

.

I simply must get in the shower… I met a screenwriter. This old screenwriter used to write for Colombo and McMillan and wife. He said the strangest thing to me. He said “Daniel there’s only a finite amount of wealth in the world. Humanity is not about hoarding that money. Being human… Being human is making sure that everybody has enough to live.”

.

I’ll leave you with that.

Unbridled Capitalism vs. Human Strife

Welcome back, My Dear Readers, to The Other Shoe. Today I am going to write about a concern I am facing with regarding my publications at The Other Shoe. I like to write about news and policy that strikes a personal note, to me. Policy that effects my life, or the lives of people close to me. For the past three years I have written articles on a myriad of subjects. I have never written any article just to lambast a party or political party member.

.

I do not write articles to bias anyone. I do my best to write articles that are, at their core, unbiased. I avoid writing about junk ‘news’ or who is investigating whom. I do not hide the fact that my personal politics are ‘progressive’. I admire President Teddy Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt (coincidence or what?) It is my heartfelt belief that America is built on the shoulders of the working class. I believe that concentrating wealth is a ‘Bad Thing’ and has resulted in two major economic downturns (The Great Depression and The Great Recession) have brought economic strife through out our great land.

.

. I am not alone, in that school of thought. As a matter of fact, the majority of ‘Ivy League’ and non-religious (secular) economists agree. Wealth, in America, is built from the ground, up! I also think that our nation’s overall health can be judged by how well the least of us are doing. That America, like many other great civilizations (ancient Athens, Rome, Egypt to name a few) is built by the lower and Middle class. That without health, and a certain amount of wealth, in these working classes your nation will collapse.

.

I learned, in college, history of many past civilizations. There does need to be a wealthy and or ruling class, but without the poor and Middle class’s wealth in mind? Your civilization will collapse. I do not, however, believe that any people should be allowed to take advantage of programs for the; poor, seniors and the disabled. I do not think they should become a way of life. (As a side-note, there are more studies that show this phenomenon is less common than certain politicians claim). I do not believe in Social Darwinism. That just reeks of White Supremacy and Ruling RACE ideals. I have read Ayn Rand’s ‘Atlas Shrugged’ and ‘The Fountainhead’. I have also read L. Ron Hubbard’s ‘Dianeticis’.

.

Having said, I no more believe Objectivism any more than I believe that aliens are responsible for all our ‘Bad Emotions’. I was born to, and raised, in a genuine Middle Class family in the 1960’s and 70’s. We were not rich, but we never went without. In my life I have lived.. poorly. With little income and living hand-to-mouth. I have also had the great fortune and (with hard work) lived and worked in Beverly Hills! I have saved money, often, in my life. I had quite a bit of savings, when I was struck with this malady. I hated that, in fact, I went through it faster than it took to save. When I first got ill and could not work.

.

I do not think it is good for our country for millions of Americans to be homeless. I do not think it is in the best interest of our nation’s future for children to go hungry in the single wealthiest nation in the history of mankind. Regardless of why the child’s family does not have money for food? The child should never go hungry. Period. Neither do I believe that a child of three or four should weigh a hundred pounds (or more). Aye, there’s the rub! See, like a ‘canary-in-a-coal-mine’ I think there is an social… natural indicator of something institutionally wrong. That in one single neighborhood there can be a child nearly starving, going to bed every night hungry. And two blocks over, there is a child the exact same age and they are morbidly obese. THAT, My Dear Readers, is like a canker sore for everyone to see. This, obviously to me, is a sign of an underlying illness (sociologic and economic) much in need of a cure.

.

However, like mankind’s shift from the polytheisms of ancient man, to today’s monotheism. The cure of which I speak would be as; difficult, instrumental, and world shaping. Imagine that, for just a moment. For the past two millennium (two thousand years) mankind (for the most part) now believe in the monotheism of One True God.

However, for nearly ten times the length in time (it is estimated that mankind worshipped many ‘God’(s) for roughly twenty thousand years) polytheism was the truth!

.

We all learned of the Grecian ‘God’(s); Zeus, Athena and Apollo to name just a few.[1] These “God’(s) were worshipped for nearly a thousand years. (from 800 BC to 200-300 AD)[2] In the land of Ur (ancient Mesopotamia) dates back to 3,800 BC and in Ur they were polytheists that believed in Gods in the sky. The father of Abraham (the father of the Hebrew faith, and the beginning of Monotheism) was a maker of statues of these ‘Gods. It was Abraham that is the single man that set in motion the change, for all mankind, the shift from polytheism to our modern day monotheism. The Hebrew Bible (the Torah - Tanakh) was the very first book of its type.[3] The very first time mankind had written down the stories that made up their faith.

.

Mankind has not always believed in “One True God”. In reality mankind has spent more millennium convinced that there were many ‘Gods’ than mankind has spent practicing monotheism. That’s right! We, the people of this planet, are new to this monotheism. It took a thousand years, for this new religion to take root. Many millions of the followers of; Judaism, Christianity and other monotheistic religions DIED in the pursuit of this new faith. This faith that taught “One God rules all things” and not what had been worshipped and believe for ten times two-fold millennium before. However, here we are in a world where practitioners of polytheism are referred to as pagans. A world where billions of human beings believe in the ‘One True God’ be his/her name be; Yahweh, God or Allah.

.

It is this kind of monumental change mankind is facing, today. Capitalism is actually kind of new. It is not always been the engine that drove commerce. For a time, not so long ago, England and Spain built these huge Armadas. Fleets of ships that roved the seas. They would do some exploring, but that was not the reason for their existence. These huge fleets of ships, these Armadas, were built for one reason. Theft!

.

Each country used their armada to steal gold and spices and treasures from the ‘New World’ going back to Europe. This was from around the later part of the Sixteenth century and the beginning of the Seventieth. For several decades… and I found this so flipping amazing when I studied it in college… These two World Powers actually considered stealing from each other Commerce’. They based their entire economies on trading wealth back and forth. Looking back across time… it is pretty nearly hilarious. However, at the time it was happening? They were deadly serious. They were stealing gold and artifacts from cultures they conquered and killed (not creating anything, just killing and stealing). Then, as they were brining these treasure back (again, stolen loot) the opposing faction would attack and steal (yet again) the ill-gotten loot.

.

OK So, you see, back in the latter sixteenth century and well into the seventieth the two largest powers on the planet Earth built their whole economies on theft! The Spaniards would steal from the Incans. While taking the gold and treasure back from the New World the English would raid their ships and steal the loot stolen from the Incans. Then, when the Spanish royal family was low on loot, and just couldn’t get a ship home with the stolen loot. Then the Spaniards would take their armada and steal back the stolen Incan loot. Round and round this went, for several decades, until one day one side woke up and decided that this economic model is unsustainable.

.

My point is that this seemed, for a time, a perfectly normal and viable engine for commerce. Just as the monotheist looks back on polytheism and thinks to themselves how stupid (FYI this is reflected in the tradition of ‘April Fools’ – Pagan vs. Christian). We now look back on the circle of theft that sustained huge Armadas as foolishness. It is in my heart of hearts that do believe that one day (and it may be soon) mankind will look back on the capitalism as the same kind of cannibalistic engine for an economy. That capitalism was an improper and even immoral engine to drive a people’s economy.

.

Then, today, I see an article about the newly sworn in Pope Francis. Pope Francis recently Tweeted:

.

“My thoughts turn to all who are unemployed, often as a result of a self-centered mindset bent on profit at any cost.”[4]

.

He regularly cites the pitfalls of unrestrained capitalism. Speaking on Vatican Radio in May of this year;

.

A society that “does not pay a just wage”, that “does not give work” to people; a society that “that only looks to its balance books, that only seeks profit” is unjust and goes against God.”[5]

.

Further;

.

"Not paying a just [wage], not providing work, focusing exclusively on the balance books, on financial statements, only looking at making personal profit. That goes against God! How many times – how many times – have we read in 'L'Osservatore Romano' .... A headline that impressed me so much the day of the Bangladesh tragedy, 'Living on 38 euros a month': this was the payment of these people who have died ... And this is called 'slave labor!'. And today in this world there is slavery that is made with the most beautiful gift that God has given to man: the ability to create, to work, to be the makers of our own dignity. How many brothers and sisters throughout the world are in this situation because of these, economic, social, political attitudes and so on ... ".[6]

.

And even further;

.

“Today - the Pope said - we can no longer say what St. Paul said: "He who will not work, will not eat," but we have to say: "He who does not work, has lost his dignity", because "he cannot find any opportunities for work". On the contrary: "Society has stripped that person of dignity." [7]

.

Finally;

.

“Today, it would do us good to listen to the voice of God, when he spoke to Cain, saying: "Cain, where is your brother?". Today, however, we hear this voice: "Where is your brother who has no work? Where is your brother who is subjected to slave labor?. Let us pray, let us pray for all these brothers and sisters who are in this situation. So be it"[8] .

I find it reassuring that on the very day I am ready to publish this article. These quotes I find from our current Pope. Comments, so rarely seen from head’s of state, about the crippling income disparity that runs rife through out our land.

.

I do not think that the Pope is attacking capitalism or the wealthy. That is a strategy that would likely fail. I believe that the Pope, like myself, is urgently warning mankind of the pitfalls of unrestrained capitalism! That living just by the bottom line of a ledger is not a viable plan. That we, as a people, as a nation, and a species have to work to create more and equal opportunity. Least our societies collapse.

.

That brings us to the end of (what took three and a half days to write) this article. As always, My Dear Readers, you deeply honor me by coming here to read my words. In closing, I want you to rest assured. I mean no harm or offense to anyone. Thank you!

The Whittiling of America

Welcome back, My Dear Readers, to ‘The Whittling  of America’ here @ The Other Shoe. Have you ever watched a man whittle a piece of wood into something of wonder and joy? As a young boy I used to watch my maternal grandfather whittle away at anything he could put his hands on. It keep his hands busy and his mind off of drink. When I got older, he taught me how to whittle, too.

.

He started out with knife safety, teaching you whittle the wood and not your fingers. Well, I was never that coordinated, at least as a boy. So my first few attempts turned out items colored red. I got better, over time, but even as a young boy watching whittling, I wondered… 'What happens to what is left?'

.

Being curious, and outspoken, one day I asked my grandfather; “What happens to what you whittle away, what’s on the floor” He laughed and told me “That part don’t matter much, it’s not part of the design… you just toss it aside and forget it… don’t pay that no nevermind.”

.

That didn’t sit well with me, because, don’t you see, that even as a small boy I saw that as wasteful As such, not being wasteful that could not be abided for by me. So when I would finish whittling I would take the scraps off the floor and I would use them for litter for the animal I had, or I would use them with little clue to make something out of them all on their own. But I just couldn’t let those wood scraps on the floor go wasted I had to put them to better use.

My Dear Readers, right now we’re watching the whittling of America. Let me take a moment and tried to explain. What I see in America disturbs me greatly more than even I can put into words (and that, My Dear Readers is QUITE A FEAT). I see this happening now, I can’t take the 'whittling away' at the very core of our country. I see it every day. We all know America ,right now, is only haves and have not’s. The great thing is most thet can read, write and speak ARE ‘haves’.

.

You, My Dear Readers, I am willing to bet, are mostly made up of people that have and do not live hand-to-mouth. For a majority of my life I was a have. I had a good job, I made a living wage, I bought a new car, and I had fine clothes. Then one day I was struck by a physical malady that knocked me off my feet. Unfortunately, for me, I really haven’t been able to get up again but... that’s my cross to bear.

.

Let me give you an example, that I know everyone can see, and everyone in America right now, believe it or not, is taking part in. Let me say it in one word, Walmart. Walmart started out, when I was a just a glimmer in my father's eye, as Waltons. Guess I dated myself there, some. When I was born; Ike was President and there were just 48 states to this great Union of ours. Walton's store was a very much like a T.G.& Y. My mother, God rest her soul, would never set foot in a Walton’s store.

And let me tell you why. My mother said, and these are the words not mine, she couldn’t stand walking into a Walton's store because every single time she did? All the women, working there, were crying. My mother told me that the women working there did not make enough money in a day’s work to go home and feed their children much less clothe them. From what my mother told me, when I was just a boy, the women would work all day and at the end of the day they would be paid just two quarters, that’s all. Now my mother was talking about during the war, World War II for those of you not my age or older. These would be women whose husbands were in Europe or the Pacific theater fighting for this great country.

.

The wives of these honorable men would work in factories, when there was work. However, in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi there wasn’t a lot of that type of work. So Mr. Walton had this brilliant idea. I will open a chain of 'Five-and-Dime' stores (and name them after me) and I’ll give jobs to women whose men are fighting at war. And I will pay them $.50 a day to work. Now these women would work for 8 to 10 hours a day. They would work at very arduous physical work, and they would get paid $.50. Now, I'll do the math for you, that is a nickel per hour he would pay these women.

 .

Not much has changed, here in the 21st century, for the Walton family. Because, you see, the Walton's are now the single largest employer in our country, they call it Wal-Mart. Seven out of ten1of all of Wal-Mart’s employees are on; Food Stamps (SNAP-Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Medicare,W.I.C. (Women with Infant Children food subsitance program) or some other subsistence programs meant for the impoverished of our country. That 'Greeter' that smiles at you when you go to spend your week's pay, that store associate that helps you pick out the correct T.V., Oven, or dining set you’re looking for, and the boy that picks up the carts from those huge football field sized lots. Seven out of ten of them, all live with help from our governments... that's you and me.

The smiling, apparently happy, Wal-Mart workers. work 8 to 10 hours a day, to go home and eat their dinner. A Styrofoam cup of Ramen noodles, paid for by you and me. If they become ill, you see, they either die or they get medical care from a Medicare Dr. Again, paid for by you and me. If they are foolish enough to get pregnant the pregnancy is monitored by a Medicare Dr., the child is delivered in a Medicare hospital, and that poor child is to be fed with formula paid for by you and me (W.I.C.).

 .

I really hope, My Dear Readers, that you feel the vile disgust I feel as I write every word of this article today. Because you see; the war is over, the boys came home, but now it’s not just the women that are living in poverty. Let me repeat something, you might’ve glossed over earlier, that I said before Wal-Mart is the single largest employer and our nation today = seven out of TEN Walmart employees live below poverty.

I’m to go to the bathroom and I want you to think about the last sentence in the paragraph above. (Playing theme song from Jepordy...)

.

I’m back now, thank you!

Right now, I am going to do what it is I do best. I’m going to try and paint picture for you, with words [Thank you, God, for that ability] The very next time you go to Wal-Mart, I want you to do this for me; when you see the female cashier, and she is a young woman of 20 or 30, think about her coming home after eight hours standing behind a cash register, working for Wal-Mart, just to feed her infant child formula paid for by W.I.C. (you and me). When you see the young man pushing carts, back into the store, think about him going home and his whole dinner is a cup of Ramen noodles, paid for by Food Stamps (you and me). When you are at the electronics department picking out that newest game your son and daughter is dying for, the young person that handa you that game if they get sick then the doctor, they see, will be paid for by Medicare (you and me). And finally I’d like for you to think about the person that couldn’t get a job at Wal-Mart, because they wouldn’t betray their beliefs. Now they sit outside Wal-Mart dirty and disheveled beaten by society... with a hand out begging for the scraps on the floor left by 'The Whittiling of America'.
